JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin has said he was arrested as an abortion protester about 25 years ago, but he's not saying anything more about it.

Akin campaign adviser Rick Tyler said Wednesday that Akin never was charged and the campaign will not release any further details about the incident.

At a news conference last Friday in Kansas City, Akin acknowledged the arrest but did not go into specifics. An aide had said the campaign would release more details later.

Akin's remarks about abortion have drawn considerable attention in his challenge against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. When asked last month about his opposition to abortion, Akin explained that pregnancy is rare in rape because women's bodies have biological defenses against what he called "legitimate rape." He has since apologized.
