Edwardsville, IL (KSDK) - Edwardsville Director of Police James Bedell tendered his resignation Friday, Mayor Gary Niebur said. Bedell's resignation takes effect immediately.

Bedell was appointed Edwardsville Police Director on September 19, 2007. He moved to the area from Plainfield, Illinois following a career with the Naperville Police Department. He reached the rank of commander in that department before leaving.

Mayor Niebur said his office learned Friday that James Bedell is being investigated by the IRS and FBI.  Neighbors told NewsChannel 5's Grant Bissell that several federal vehicles were parked outside Bedell's home earlier on Friday.

Major Don Lask, Edwardsville Deputy Chief of Police, has been appointed interim police director. Lask, who was appointed to the deputy chief rank on October 27, 2002, has previously served in an interim capacity during several periods.

Mayor Niebur said he'll consult with the city council and administrative staff regarding the permanent selection of a replacement for James Bedell. Major Lask has already indicated he does not wish to be the permanent replacement.
