St. Louis (KSDK) - The Halloween countdown is on. Have you picked out a costume yet? Well, now there's a warning out about an accessory you'll want to keep an eye on.
Take a trip to Johnnie's Brock's Party Warehouse on Jefferson Avenue and you can treat yourself, so you and your home can get all tricked out this Halloween.
While this season super heroes are in, what's out will give you a scare.
"We heard from some outside sources that improper use of colored contacts can be extremely damaging to the eye," said Scott Breihan, who manages the rental costumes at the store.
"One night of fun really isn't worth losing your vision," explained Mary Migneco, an optometrist and instructor at Washington University.
Here's why she said doctors don't like them, Johnnie Brock's stopped selling them and mostly online retailers are the only ones left selling the look: "The Halloween contact lenses come in a one size fits all. One size does not fit all, just as we can all relate to getting a pair of shoes that doesn't fit. You end up with blisters on your feet. Same idea: you'll end up with an abrasion, which can lead to an ulcer, which can lead to an eye infection."
Migneco said you can add vision loss to that list. And the FDA knows it. The agency's website warns that selling such medical devices without a prescription is against the law.
"And you want to see as many Halloweens as you can," Breihan added.
Now, if you absolutely need colored contacts for your costume, our experts say to talk to your doctor. In many cases, they can order ones perfectly fitted for you.
