St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A Bridgeton man charged with assault of a law enforcement officer in the shooting of a St. Louis police officer will hear opening statements in his trial this morning.

Arthur Lee Jones, 24, is standing trial this week in the November 2010 shooting.

The incident occurred in the 4600 block of Margaretta in north St. Louis just after midnight.  The officer said he saw a man later identified as Jones acting suspiciously.  The officer stopped his patrol car and illuminated Jones with his spotlight.   It was then that Jones turned towards the officer and opened fire.

One of the bullets fired at the patrol officer penetrated the police car and struck the policeman in the buttocks according to police reports.

Jones then ran from the shooting scene to a building in the 4000 block of Cora where SWAT/Hostage Response officers sealed the area and took Jones into custody.

Authorities also recovered the gun used in the attack inside the building where Jones was discovered.

Arthur Lee Jones could face a life prison term if convicted.
