Earth City, MO (KSDK) - Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation are trying to move motorists from the Blanchette Bridge to alternative east-west routes.
They suggest the Page Avenue Extension or Route 370.
Tom Evers is MoDOT St. Charles County Engineer.
"Using 370 or the Page Extension are great alternatives," said Evers. "You're only a few miles up or down from the river. They're not far detours. They have good access to get into St. Charles and St. Charles County, and into St. Louis County. They have good access off of 270, and 370 feeds back into 70."
"I-64 is also another river crossing, but really the Page Extension and 370 are going to be the best roads to take. They are somewhat under-utilized today; they have the ability to take more cars."
MoDOT will be closing the westbound bridge entirely for a year-long repair project, Friday, November 2. During that time, the current eastbound bride will carry traffic in both directions.
"So the eastbound bridge today carries five lanes heading from St. Charles County into St. Louis County," said Evers. "After we divert traffic that'll be three lanes in each direction going across the eastbound bridge only."
Evers said in order to add a lane on the current eastbound bridge each lane will be narrowed from 12 feet to 10 or 11 feet.
The Blanchette Bridge project is scheduled to last less than a year. Evers said the contractor is obligated to finish with a year, and they have incentives to finish early.
MoDOT has a history of finishing such construction and repair projects early.
