St. Louis (KSDK) - A former elementary school principal accused of exposing himself in a local park has been cleared.

James Walters was accused of exposing himself in Forest Park on March 16. At the time of the alleged incident, he was principal of Point Elementary School in the Mehlville School District.

The summons stated a park ranger observed Walters jog over to a white car near Concourse and McKinley around 3 p.m. and then expose and fondle himself.

The park ranger said he watched as the car drove to the upper Muny parking lot as Walters jogged behind.

Walters called the incident a misunderstanding, but was put on paid suspension.

In May, Mehlville School District Superintendent Dr. Eric Knost sent a letter home to parents saying Walters would not return to work, but would not disclose whether he left voluntarily or was fired.

On September 25, the case was heard and it was determined the park ranger did not provide convincing testimony.

The defense presented surveillance videos that showed the areas in which the alleged incidents took place, and the videos never show Walters, Walters and a white car, or the park ranger pursuing them as he had stated.

The video does show the park ranger stopping a group of people in the upper Muny parking lot and the ranger's car parked where the white car allegedly was during the incident.

There's no word on whether Walters will be reinstated at Point Elementary.
