MORRISON, Ill. (AP) - The judge in the murder trial of a man accused in a two-state killing spree that left eight people dead has dismissed a juror.
An attorney representing one of the witnesses at Nicholas Sheley's trial said Wednesday that he represented the juror in a divorce case with a pending child support issue.
The (Sterling) Daily Gazette reports Rock Island County Judge F. Michael Meersman said divorce is different from being a party in a lawsuit or charged with a crime. But the judge dismissed the male juror anyway. Prosecutors said the issue didn't automatically disqualify the juror. Sheley's defense attorney asked the juror be dismissed for cause.
One of three alternates will take the seat.
