Hillsboro, MO (KSDK) - A guilty plea in Jefferson County from a one time janitor in the Festus School District has resulted in a ten year prison term.
Michael Burgess, 48 of Festus, pleaded guilty last month to separate counts of statutory rape and sodomy in the May 2001 crimes which victimized the ten year old girl.
Along with the ten years behind bars, Burgess was also ordered to register as a lifetime sex offender and will be required lifetime supervision once he is released.
Police investigators say Burgess had known the victim and her family for several years, and the incidents did not occur on any school property.
Burgess worked as a custodian for the Festus School District for more than six years and school officials say a background check on Burgess showed no past problems when he was hired.
