Houston, Texas (KPRC) -- A Texas state senator had an impressive showing in the election last night. He won, despite having died last month.

The win was important to the politician's supporters and family.

"It was very important to him and to my family and I, my children, because he worked so hard to get where he was." said Gallegos' widow, Theresa Gallegos.

The late State Senator Mario Gallegos' family worked until the last vote was counted to ensure a victory.

He was first elected to the State Senate in 1994.

Election Day 2012 was an emotional victory for the family, all acknowledging it would be the last time they would vote for Mario.

"It's been very bittersweet the last couple of weeks, with the loss of my husband and all the people coming out to support him," said Theresa Gallegos, the late Senator's widow.

Gallegos' widow said her husband asked his supporters to keep his legacy alive, but the race for the district is not over.

Governor Rick Perry will appoint someone to serve the rest of Gallegos' term. He has 20 days to call a special election

Gallegos' supporters said they already know who they want to run against Republican challenger RW Bray. They want State Representative and former Houston City Council Member Carol Avarado.

Avarado declined to speak about the family's endorsement out of respect for the late state senator's victory.
