St. Louis (KSDK) - A local chiropractor was convicted Thursday for healthcare fraud.
Dr. Anthony Calandro and the Chiropractic Accident Centre of Crestwood were convicted of billing insurance companies for services and appointments patients missed.
Calandro's business assistant, Sherry Rueter, pleaded guilty in October to four felony counts of making false statements related to health care services. She will be sentenced January 24, 2013.
Court documents state that in 2010 and 2011 undercover investigations revealed Calandro and Rueter billed multiple insurance companies for services never rendered.
Between 2006 and 2011 reimbursement claims were submitted that stated they had taken more x-rays than they had actually taken, and falsely stated that patients had been provided services during appointments that were canceled or missed.
Court documents state thousands of false claims were submitted for missed appointments.
Calandro was convicted of one felony count of health care fraud and three counts of making false statements related to health care services. The corporation was convicted of one felony count of health care fraud and four counts of making false statements.
Calandro will be sentenced February 7, 2013. He faces up to ten years in prison and fines up to $250,000 for the heath care fraud conviction and up to five years in prison for each false statements conviction.
The corporation faces fines up to $500,000 for each conviction.
