Hartford, IL (KSDK) - The Madison County Coroner's Office has identified a 23-year-old barge worker killed Thursday in an accident along the Mississippi River.
The accident happened around 5:10 p.m. at National Maintenance, a marine transportation repair company, located in the 400 block of S. Hawthorne in Hartford, Illinois.
Jason Sagez was working on a barge when a chain broke under tension. The chain struck Sagez and knocked him into the Mississippi River. Co-workers pulled Sagez out of the river before emergency responders arrived.
An autopsy revealed Jason Sagez died as a result of blunt force trauma to the pelvis.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hanks-Gress Funeral Home in Hardin, Illinois.
The Hartford Police Department and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident.
