St. Charles (KSDK)-- People lined the banks of the Missouri River Sunday morning to watch a section of the Blanchette Bridge come crashing down.
Missouri Department of Transportation crews closed the bridge for an hour while they took out a 350 foot section. It took 25lbs of explosives to do the job.
The coast guard gives MoDot 48 hours to remove the bridge debris from the river. All of the pieces are marked so workers can be sure all of the debris is removed.
It's part of a $63 million renovation of the westbound span. The bridge is 54 years old and MoDot hopes the repairs will keep it going for another 50 years.
Both directions are sharing six lanes of the eastbound bridge during the year-long project.
