St. Louis County (KSDK) - It has been a long time coming, but thousands of dollars are finally going back where they belong.
It all started in May when the manager of the South County Goodwill came across more than $14,000.
Once word got out Goodwill was searching for the rightful owner, more than 15 people came forward. Goodwill decided to get the courts involved.
On Monday, the court awarded the money to Renee Stout who had hired a company to hold an estate sale at her parents' home in Columbia, Illinois. The money apparently came from that home, where Stout says her mother stashed cash.
The court ruled Stout should get the money less $979 to pay Goodwill for attorney and court fees, but Goodwill says they will not take the $979 and let Stout keep it.
Stout says she is happy with the outcome and says it "warms her heart to know there are good people in the world."
