St. Louis ( KSDK ) -- An occupied home went up in flames early Friday in a blaze which proved tricky for firefighters to douse.

The one-story brick home at St. Louis Avenue and Abner Place had bars on the doors and windows, which made it difficult to get inside.

Once inside, firefighters determined that the blaze had raced through the basement and threatened the stability of the first floor, so they retreated and battled the fire from outside.

The occupants of the home were away at the time.  No firefighters were hurt.
