(CNN) - The American Academy of Pediatrics is trying a new tactic to fight teen pregnancy.

It is encouraging doctors to talk with teens about emergency contraception options like Plan B and Next Choice.

Emergency contraception is designed to prevent pregnancy after having unprotected sex.

The group says nearly 80 percent of teen pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Those pregnancies happen because no contraception is used or the contraception failed, according to the AAP.

The organization says physicians who are morally against emergency contraception still have an obligation to offer the option to their patients.
