Jefferson County, Mo (KSDK) -- A group of friends tried to reenact a scene from the movie "Savages" when one of them was shot in the chest.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said the unnamed victim was shot in a unit at the Walden Pond Apartments in the 400 block of Thoreau Trail in High Ridge at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

The department said the group had been drinking when the victim and his friend discussed how to disarm someone with a weapon, based on a scene from the movie.  While they were in the process of the demonstration, a 9mm handgun went off.

The 25-year-old victim was shot once in the chest.  He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is listed in critical condition.

"There's nothing funny about this whatsoever. You're talking about a person's life is at stake," said Capt. Ron Arnhart.  "When you interject drinking, when you interject an outside source or something where it's gonna impair your judgement, these types of incidents occur. The best thing to do is leave the weapon out of it all together."

The 27-year-old shooter, who is also the owner of the handgun, was taken into custody.  Prosecutors are now taking a look at the case to see whether charges should be filed.
