SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Family members, fans and fellow boxers have said goodbye today to former boxing champ Hector "Macho" Camacho at a memorial in Puerto Rico.

Hundreds of people filed past his open casket, in a gymnasium decked out with black carpet and curtains. The slain boxer was dressed in white, along with a large gold crucifix and a necklace spelling out his nickname, "Macho."

Camacho was shot last week while sitting in a parked car with a friend outside a bar in his Puerto Rican hometown. The friend died at the scene, and Camacho died three days later after doctors removed him from life support. Police have said they have suspects, but haven't arrested anyone for the shooting.

Family members, including the boxer's mother, were the first to spend time in front of the coffin. Then came a cross-section of Puerto Rican society including parents with young children, the elderly, road crew workers and U.S. soldiers.

A police officer recalled how he saw Camacho one day and drove over in his squad car to greet him, but the boxer fled. Later, out of uniform, the officer said he ran into him again, and they exchanged a laugh.

The officer says, "For Puerto Rican people he was something great."
