Police: Impaired driver hits pregnant woman, daycare

Pine Lawn, MO (KSDK) - Police tell NewsChannel 5 a pregnant woman was hit by a vehicle operated by a man suspected to be impaired.

The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday on northbound Jennings Station Road at Vetter Place in Pine Lawn, Missouri.

Police say the 22-year-old woman was waiting at a bus stop when the man drove over her and then hit a daycare, approximately 25-30 yards from the bus stop. Nobody was inside the building at the time, and it is was no longer in use.

Witnesses say the man did not appear to slow down after he hit the woman.

Another driver told police the man was driving erratically before he hit the woman.

The man is in police custody at DePaul Hospital. Police say there is some level of impairment, but they are still investigating the accident.

Police did not find a Missouri driver's license on the man, but say he did have a Guatemalan ID.

The victim was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She is expected to survive. There's no word on the condition of her unborn child.

The Missouri Highway Patrol is en route to the scene for accident reconstruction.
