Caseyville, IL (KSDK) - On Tuesday we heard from a Caseyville police officer who helped two people escape from a burning home.

Officer Andrew Schuler was on patrol around 11 p.m. Monday when he smelled smoke. A few minutes later he spotted flames shooting 20 feet in the air out of a home on Main Street.

He stopped, called for help, then banged on the door of the burning home.

"I kept knocking and I kept knocking then I a heard a hiss the gas main that's what was on fire and finally someone said 'Who is it?' and I said, 'Police! Your house is on fire! Come to the door now!' then I pulled him out the door and said, 'Look!' and he said, 'Oh (expletive),'" said Officer Schuler.

"I said 'Thanks.' Good guy. I apologized for cursing at him at the door," said fire victim Jeffrey Lintzenich.

Crews were able to safely shut off the gas.

It took firefighters about one hour to put the fire out.

The cause is under investigation.
