St. Louis County (KSDK) - St. Louis County police are giving purse snatchers something to think about this holiday season.
Undercover officers are using bait purses to catch thieves in an effort to cut down on theft from holiday shoppers.
Purses will be left at shopping centers, grocery stores and other busy places.
Police say the bait purse program is very similar to their highly successful bait car initiative.
"What the bait purse is about is just simply creating the opportunity for bad guys to break the law. And I know that doesn't sound right, but what we're doing is putting a purse down unsupervised and if a subject wants to grab that purse or steal something out of it if it is under constant surveillance," said Officer Randy Vaughn.
The bait cars and bait purses are part of the county police force's holiday shopping enforcement initiative.
