St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - The Saint Louis Zoo Association is hosting an open house to present the public with information about the upcoming zoo expansion at the former site of Forest Park Hospital.
The association purchased the 13.5-acre property from the hospital's former owner, Medline Industries Inc., based in Mundelein, Illinois. Medline Industries is the largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical and surgical supplies in the country.
At the time of closing, the Saint Louis Zoo Association paid $6 million for the property, which had previously appraised for nearly $12 million. Medline Industries allowed the association to purchase the land at a reduced price as part of a charitable donation.
The Saint Louis Zoo expansion open house is scheduled for December 11 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the zoo's Living World at the North Entrance. More details on the open house can be found at STLZoo.org/expansion.
The open house is part of a six to eight month process to create a lasting framework for the Saint Louis Zoo expansion. The association has hired St. Louis-based landscape architectural firm SWT Design and Chicago architect Edward Uhlir to develop a plan for the grounds. Uhlir served as project manager for Chicago's Millennium Park.
