FREEBURG, Ill. (KSDK) - A pair of officers fired from the Freeburg Police Department for alleged misconduct will not be prosecuted, the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office said Wednesday.
Although the two officers won't be prosecuted, St. Clair State's Attorney Brendan Kelly says their actions may have tainted cases where they appeared as witnesses.
The two men, Steve Burrows and John Blomenkamp, were 11 and 18-year veterans of the police force.
Freeburg Village Mayor Ray Danford said other officers complained Burrows and Blomenkamp were vandalizing department property. The department installed hidden cameras around the property.
The video showed the two breaking into a secured drawer and taking items belonging to another officer and other pranks.
Steve Burrows and John Blomenkamp were placed on administrative leave May 4 and fired September 4 following a vote by the village board.
The two men and their defense attorneys claimed city leadership was out to get them because of union disputes. Mayor Danford said the firings were not connected their roles in the police union, but rather accusations of impropriety.
