St. Louis (KSDK) -- The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department could name a new chief before the first of the year, according to spokesperson David Marzullo.

The candidates will interview this week to replace Chief Daniel Isom

Marzullo said after the completion of the interviews, the department does not know how long it will be until a new chief is chosen, but it could be before the first of the year.

State law requires the St. Louis police chief be selected from within the department among the ranks of captain or above.

Isom served the department for 24 years, four of them as chief. He's retiring January 1, 2013 to take a teaching position at University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he earned a bachelor's degree, master's degree, and PhD in criminology and criminal justice.
