UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KSDK) - A child was shot and killed Tuesday night in University City and police said his schoolmate admitted to playing with the gun when it fired.
University City police say there were called to a home in the 1500 block of Westmont Place around 6 p.m. for a report of a 12-year-old boy with a gunshot wound.
The handgun was fired by another 12-year-old who lives at the home, and a schoolmate of the boy who was shot.
The boy was shot in the head and taken to Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police identified him as Demetri Phillips, of University City.
The weapon was recovered at the scene. Police say it belongs to the grandfather of the 12-year-old who fired the weapon.
The grandfather said he had left the handgun in his bedroom, but the door to the room was unlocked.
The child who fired the weapon has been taken to Family Court while police continue their investigation.
Brittany Woods Middle School released the following statement on Demetri Phillips' death:
