ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Sam Dotson has been named the next chief of police in St. Louis.

Dotson will replace Chief Dan Isom who announced earlier this year his plans to retire January 1, 2013 to take a teaching position at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The Board of Police Commissioners held three public forums allowing citizens to give input about what the qualities the next chief should possess.

The selection process began on October 17, and 11 candidates submitted applications.

Dotson was selected on Friday as the 34th chief of police. He is a 17 year veteran of the department and has been operations director for the City of St. Louis, overseeing many of the city's departments.

He has served in various divisions within the department, including the Board of Police Commissioners, Office of the Chief, Intelligence, and Operational Planning.

Dotson has a bachelor's degree in management from Webster University and a master's degree in business administration from Fontbonne College.
