Belleville incident leads to Union Elementary School lockdown

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A suspicious incident led to the lockdown of Union Elementary School in Belleville.

Belleville police say around 2:14 p.m. they received a call about a suspect near the railroad tracks behind Union Elementary and Lindenwood University's Belleville campus.

Police responded, and saw a teen male carrying what appeared to be a rifle, pistol, and a knife. He was wearing all black clothing.

Union Elementary was immediately put on lockdown, and officers searched inside of the school before establishing an outside perimeter.

Police also searched Lindenwood and the surrounding area.

At 2:31 p.m. a 15-year-old male was taken into custody and questioned by police. He was found with two pellet guns, one similar in appearance to a 6mm M4 carbine, and the second was a pistol. A knife was also recovered.

The suspect has been interviewed and was released to his parents.

Police say there was never any threat to any students or staff.
