WASHINGTON, Mo. (KSDK) - Seven schools were on lockdown Tuesday afternoon in Washington, Missouri while police chased a man with a gun.

A deputy was trying to make a routine traffic stop when the driver sped away.

After a short pursuit, the man got out of his vehicle near Pottery and Deiner roads and ran into a wooded area.

The officer who was pursuing the man said the suspect was dressed in military fatigues and was carrying a long gun.

As a precaution, the Washington School District put all of their schools on lockdown around 12:30 p.m.

Two officers were stationed at Washington West Middle School since that was closest to where the suspect was last seen.

All students are safe, and the lockdown was implemented as a precaution.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident and has been identified as 24-year-old Derrick Howard, Jr.

An SKS rifle was found hidden in a tree in the area and was loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
