CHICHEN ITZA, Mexico (CNN) - December 21 has arrived, and so far, the world hasn't ended.
Thousands of people have converged on Chichen Itza, the ancient Mayan site, to witness the event, just in case it happens.
The ancient Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, leading some to believe a catastrophe will happen.
The Mayans themselves, however, don't buy it. They observe 394 year periods called baktuns.
To them, it's simply the end of the 13th baktun, and the beginning of the 14th.
