STAUNTON, Ill. (KSDK) - Needy families in Staunton, Illinois are getting a little extra help this holiday season thanks to a Fill the Bus drive.
In the first year of the drive, the community chipped in food, clothes, and toys. Some of it went to the food pantry, and the gifts packed into this van are going to families in town for Christmas.
Organizers say the turnout was overwhelming.
"We have used clothes going to the food pantry also for their thrift store. And all the new clothes and toys, Ms. Wiemer's had families here in town that they were delivered to. And we also raised over $6,000 in cash and bought gift cards and gift certificates for Bill's IGA for all the families," said Joseph Collins, Staunton Schools' Director of Transportation.
Collins says they plan to make this a yearly event.
