JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - An armed gunman who police say kidnapped a Jefferson County woman at gunpoint Monday morning is facing ten criminal charges.

Derrick Stewart, 34, was charged Monday with multiple counts of robbery, armed criminal action and kidnapping and one count of assault on law enforcement.

According to deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, the kidnapping took place around 9 a.m. at a home on Wild Valley Road in High Ridge.

Police say the homeowners found Stewart in their kitchen with a gun. The victims told police Stewart struck the husband with his gun and tied the man up. They say Stewart then forced the wife into her own car and demanded she take him to Hirsh Brothers Jewelry, the store the couple owns. Police believe Stewart intended to rob the store.

The woman's husband managed to get free and called police.

An officer spotted the woman's vehicle near the store and tried to stop it but they say Stewart forced the woman to drive away. Police pursued the vehicle and were able to disable the car with spike strips.

The car came to a stop near the intersection of Williams Creek Road and Hillsboro Valley Park Road. Police say Stewart got out of the car and pointed the gun at them. Officers fired at Stewart twice, but missed. Stewart attempted to flee on foot, but was tackled and arrested.

The couple was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Stewart is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
