O'FALLON, Mo. (KSDK) - An O'Fallon, Missouri day care is under investigation for reportedly leaving a 2-year-old outside in below freezing temperatures for more than four hours.

On Christmas Eve, two teachers at the Bright Start Academy on Homefield Boulevard took 16 kids outside to play. When they went back in, there were 15.

One teacher reportedly mentioned it to another. The second teacher reportedly told her she miscounted, according to a letter sent to the Academy's Board President by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Service Section for Child Care Regulation.

When the child's father came to pick her up and they couldn't find her inside, they went to the playground and found her there curled up. Once they got home, he reportedly realized she was having trouble walking.

"When the parent found the child, they ended up taking the child to an area hospital just to make sure the child was going to be fine and everything was going to be ok. And the child was treated and released," says Officer Diana Damke with O'Fallon Police. They were called in to assist with the investigation.

In that letter, the DHSS/SCCR says it found that there was no roll taken, which could have contributed to the confusion and is a violation of child care rules.

"It would be a good idea for any kind of company that handles children or people with any kind of incapabilities, handicaps, or what have you to just make sure they're aware of how many they have, and make sure they keep up with those individuals," Officer Damke says.

The license is suspended until further notice.
