(CNN) - The license plate above is at the center of a case that's now reached a U.S. court of appeals.
The state of North Carolina is fighting a U.S. district court judge's ruling that the "Choose Life" plates are unconstitutional.
Less than one month ago, Judge James Fox ruled the state violated the First Amendment because it did not also offer plates for supporters of abortion rights.
Now, according to court documents, North Carolina has appealed that ruling.
The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued in 2011 to stop the specialty plates, called the decision to appeal "unfortunate."
During the fight to get the bill passed, North Carolina lawmakers voted down amendments that would have created alternatives for abortion-rights supporters such as "Trust Women. Respect Choice."
