EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) -- Illinois state police are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Madison County that left one man dead.
Friday night shortly after 10:00, Madison County deputies responded to a report of suspicious activity at a home in the 7100 block of State Route 140. The home is located just west of Hamel and near Prairietown road.
Their investigation led them next door, where they were confronted by a man with a gun. After a confrontation, a deputy sheriff shot the man. He died at the scene.
State Police Lt. Dave Wasmuth says the man killed by the Madison County Deputy has been identified as Barry Cloninger, 51, of rural Edwardsville.
Lieutenant Wasmuth says the Madison County deputy who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
