COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - For the first time, Collinsville City Hall will be closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Collinsville was one of just a few cities in the metro area that does not close its doors for the state and federal MLK holiday, which drew criticism from some citizens.
"I think that's the reason the city kind of has a bit of a reputation of not being as racially harmonious as we would like it to be. When we see the city not participating in things like this it's kind of hard to shake that feeling," resident Pamela Sanders said during a January 2012 interview.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day falls will be observed on Monday, January 21, the same day President Barack Obama will be sworn in for his second term.
