Reynolds County, MO (KSDK)-- A Millstadt, Illinois father and his two young sons are dead after deputies say they got lost on the Ozark Trail in Reynolds County, Missouri.

Reynolds County Sheriff Tom Volner says David Decareaux, 36, headed out for a hike with his 8 and 10-year-old sons on the bluffs near Black on Saturday.

Temperatures were in the 50s at the time, and they were dressed for the warmer weather. But when they took a wrong turn and temperatures dropped and it started raining, things turned tragic.

Deputies began searching for the group Saturday night, but high water forced them to stop.

They found the three shortly after they resumed the search Sunday morning. Decareaux was dead, his two sons clinging to life.  They were taken to a nearby hospital where they later died.

The family's 4 month old yellow lab puppy survived and was still by their side when rescuers arrived.
