JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has been sworn in to office for a second term as governor.

Nixon took the oath of office Monday with his hand on a family Bible in a chilly outdoor ceremony on the steps of the state Capitol.

He is just the fourth Missouri governor to serve two consecutive terms - a feat that was not possible under the state constitution until about 45 years ago.

In prepared remarks for his inaugural address, Nixon recounted Missouri's bloody history in the Civil War. He encouraged Democrats and Republicans in charge of today's politically divided government to come together for the common good.

Nixon, a Democrat, will be working with the largest Republican legislative majorities since the Civil War era.
