MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KSDK) - A former Illinois State Trooper who killed two young girls in an accident appeared in court Thursday afternoon to try and get his driver's license back.

Matt Mitchell lost his license and driving privileges after pleading guilty to reckless homicide charges. He was driving more than 120 miles per hour and on a cell phone when he crossed the center line, hitting another car head-on in November 2007.

Sisters Jessica and Kelli Uhl died in the accident.

Mitchell was on duty, texting and talking on the phone while driving more than 100 miles per hour.

The judge denied Mitchell's request to get his license back, saying it could take up to three months before there's a decision about Mitchell's license.
