PARK HILLS, Mo. (KSDK) - One group isn't on board with the idea name the new bridge after Stan Musial.
In fact, there's a growing Facebook campaign to name it after a bridge worker who died during construction on the project.
Andy Gammon was killed in an accident while working on the bridge last spring. He leaves behind a wife and two kids and now his friends say the perfect tribute would be to put his name on the bridge.
Wednesday afternoon a family member created the Andy Gammon Memorial Bridge page on Facebook. Within just a few hours that page already had more than 1,700 "likes" and a petition to name the bridge after Andy had more than 500 signatures.
Gammon's friend says she understands the legacy of Stan Musial, but makes the case for Andy.
"Stan was a fantastic baseball player and nobody can take those things away, but the fact that Andy passed away on that bridge, he had a horrible accident and fell in," says Kristy Cunningham a family friend. "To us, it's a great legacy for his children."
"I see his Dad every morning at the coffee shop and it's heartbreaking for me to walk in and see him every day," says friend JD Cunningham. "I don't know, maybe this would help."
Gammon's supporters plan to reach out to Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill with their proposal.
