(NBC) - Monday marks a special anniversary for NASA's former shuttle program.

It was 27 years ago today, when space shuttle challenger exploded shortly after lift-off from Florida's Cape Canaveral.

Seven people died in the 1986 disaster, including New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe.

The main cause of the explosion was the failure of a seal in the right solid rocket booster due to the cold weather.
