CAHOKIA, Ill. (KSDK) - No sports, no arts or music, and shorter school days. Those are just some of the drastic cuts Cahokia Unit School District #187 is considering in an effort to make-do with less money.

The latest projections from the state of Illinois estimate the state will fall short on its funding to the district next year by 20 percent.

That's $3 million Cahokia will have to cut from its budget.

Starting Tuesday night, the superintendent will be holding a series of public meetings to get parents up to speed on what he's up against.

He expects he'll know by late April if the cuts will have to be implemented but because of state rules on notifying teachers, lay-offs could come much sooner.

Here is a list of the meetings:
Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Freshman Academy gym/café
Thursday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. in the Cahokia School of Choice gym
Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Maplewood Elementary gym
Thursday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Oliver Parks Elementary gym
