ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged a Washington, Missouri man in connection with Tuesday's police pursuit on Interstate 44.
According to court documents, 40-year-old George Waiksnis was charged on four counts, including first-degree assault to St. Louis County police officer David Steinmeyer.
Steinmeyer attempted to make a traffic stop of a Jeep Grand Cherokee along I-44 on Tuesday, January 29. When the officer got out of his patrol car, Waiksnis fired three to five shots through his own back windshield and sped off.
The chase ended a short time later when the suspect's vehicle crashed just west of Highway 141.
George Waiksnis was also charged with resisting arrest, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. In February 2007, he was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident in Franklin County.
Waiksnis remains in custody on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
