COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - Illinois State Police confiscated more than $1.5 million during a traffic stop in Collinsville last weekend involving a 62-year-old southern Arizona woman.
According to Sgt. Mike Link, a state police spokesman, a District 11 trooper patrolling southbound Interstate 55 stopped a 2004 white Volvo convertible for improper lane usage with an illegal license plate cover.
Link said the trooper grew suspicious during conversation with the driver and requested permission to search the vehicle. The driver consented to a search and the trooper located 27 vacuum-sealed plastic bags containing $1,589,860 in American currency.
Illinois State Police believe large amounts of cash such as this are connected to illegal drug trafficking.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Carole Galvez of Gila Bend, Arizona, was charged with money laundering and incarcerated at Madison County Jail in Edwardsville on $500,000 bond.
If convicted, Garole Galvez faces four to 15 years in prison.
Gila Bend, Arizona is located about 100 miles north of the US-Mexico border.
