ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - St. Louis police say license plate theft is on the rise, up 130% from this time last year. The department says in January 2012, the city had 49 license plate thefts. This January, approximately 113 plates have been stolen.

Police say the popular crime use to be cutting the registration tab off the license plate. But in recent years, people have been advised to put the tab in the middle of the plate not on the edge, to make it more difficult for the thief. Now, the thief takes the entire plate.

Because of the dramatic uptick in license plate theft, the police department is urging people to protect their vehicle. The department sells clear plate covers for $5 and in a few weeks it's getting a shipment of 1,000 anti-theft fasteners. Sometime in February, you will be able to buy the fasteners for $3. The fasteners are used instead of screws to mount the plate.

Police say you should contact your local police district if you're interested in buying the devices (anti-theft fasteners not available yet). They can also be purchased at the licensing office at City Hall and at most auto parts store.
