ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The roller coaster ride that has been calling itself January is about to take another wild turn or, more to the point, plunge as the coldest temperatures in two years drop in Thursday night.

After sunset, skies will slowly clear while the thermometer quickly drops, leaving most areas with lows of between 5 and 9 degrees above zero.  If Lambert-St. Louis International Airport sees a low of 8 degrees, it would be the lowest temperature recorded since February 10, 2011.

We'll see a few flurries today and again Friday, so winter weather will definitely have a chilling feel to it, but there won't be any real visible component and nothing to improve upon the 3 inches of snow we've had which is about six inches below normal.

After highs in the 20s and sun Friday expect clouds for Groundhog Day as we warm into the 40s for the first weekend in February.
