Former senator Scott Brown will not run for the seat of departing Sen. John Kerry in Massachusetts, the Associated Press reports.

Brown, a Republican who won a special election in 2010, was defeated in November by Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

Kerry will step down Friday and take his oath as secretary of State, replacing Hillary Rodham Clinton. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has already appointed William "Mo" Cowan to be the interim senator until a June 25 special election is held for the remainder of Kerry's term.
