(KSDK) - Not many business models are as sweet as what the Lubeley family whipped up back in the 30's. A family owned and operated bakery and deli where the third generation is now rolling out those old favorites and mardi gras must haves.
"We started with customers who came from New Orleans who liked our product asking us can you make a king cake," says Susan Suardi.
That was about 30 years ago and this year they'll twist together more than a thousand king cakes. Sprinkle pounds and pounds of sugar and place the baby inside the box.
"The story is if you find the baby in the king cake it's your responsibility to have the party the following year," Suardi explains.
There's another, more lasting responsibility that comes with a cake they started mixing up five years ago.
"We'll do either a pink or a blue filling," Suardi points out.
A cake that let's the Lubeley family in on another family's most precious secret. A secret even the parents sometimes wait to learn with family and friends when they cut or bite into a reveal cake.
"When they cut into the cake they'll find the color of the icing and reveal the sex of their unborn child," Suardi adds.
Of course it kind of makes this family part of those other families for years to come.
