WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNN) - Ten percent of adult D.C. residents say they're lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. That's the highest in the nation, according to a new Gallup poll.
The lowest percentage of adults who identify as part of the LGBT community is in North Dakota, at 1.7 percent.
The nationwide average is 3.5 percent and, according to the poll, most of the states fall within that average.
Only Washington, D.C. and Hawaii were above five percent, and only North Dakota was below two.
Gallup says this was the largest single study on the distribution of the LGBT population.
