(KSDK) -- If your pet gets sick, what do you do? Most likely you will take your furry friend to the vet. You may even give them over the counter medication.
Dr. Stacey Wallach with Town and Country Veterinary Hospital stopped by Today In St. Louis. She said there are a few factors to consider before giving your pet OTC medication.

Dogs bodies are not like ours and some OTC meds can have bad results. For example, ibuprofen can be toxic for your pet while aspirin can cause problems with clotting, ulcers and gastrointestinal issues.

Antihistamines can be given safely to pets but they are usually much less effective. Be sure to check with your vet about proper dosing before trying these medications for your pet's allergies.
