ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - Gov. Jay Nixon visited the St. Charles County Economic Development Center Wednesday to talk about his plan to strengthen Medicaid in Missouri.
Nixon's proposal would provide coverage to an additional 300,000 Missouri residents and bring $5.7 billion to the state. Residents who can't afford health insurance and earn less than 138 percent of the Federal Poverty Level would be eligible. That means a family of four that makes $32,500 per year would be eligible.
Because hospitals in Missouri are required by law to treat patients even if they do not have health insurance, the cost of caring for those people is passed on to the insured by paying higher premiums for their health insurance. The plan would reduce the amount of money shifted to those paying health insurance premiums.
