COLUMBIA, Ill. (KSDK) - The Doggie Stylist in Columbia, Illinois is cutting off the clippers Thursday.
"We already started calling our regular customers that were scheduled for tomorrow and rescheduled them," says owner Barb Calhoun.
She says they were able to squeeze some in Wednesday, and she expects a rush after the storm.
"We're getting calls now...everybody wants to come in this weekend and as far as next week because they'll be all dirty and full of muddy slush the storm we have, so actually it'll be good for business next week."
It's a different story at St. Peters Bone and Joint Surgery Inc. They'll be open, but Dr. Brandon Larkin says some patients have already cancelled.
"It'll be a slow day absolutely," says Larkin. "We'll have a fair amount of no show patients and patients that cancel. And that's absolutely fine. If they're not comfortable driving, I don't want them out there."
They can usually get people in the next day. Patients scheduled for surgery will have to wait a little longer.
"We'll be busy the next day though, unfortunately, with people sliding around on the ice and snow I think we'll see a fair bit at the end of the week."
Crews in St. Peters are also making last minute preparations. Director of Emergency Management Ed Gilliam is hoping for anything but ice. Whatever hits, he says people can sign up to get free emergency texts and email alerts through their system called Nixle.
"Our local media does a great job of getting out information concerning school closures, different events that are cancelled," Gilliam says. "But when we're talking about an emergency, if we have to close down an interstate highway or a major thoroughfare we want to push that information out to our residents so that they're aware of that in a timely manner."
He hopes they won't have to use it.
If you live in St. Peters, you can follow this link to sign up for Nixle.
St. Louis also participates in Nixle. To sign up text STLCEMA to 888777.
The system is used by cities and towns across the country. You can check Nixle's website to see if you live in a participating location.
